Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Montagu Place Hotel? It’s tucked away on this quiet Georgian terrace that feels completely removed from the chaos of Oxford Street, even though you’re literally a three-minute walk from Marble Arch tube station. I mean, you step off that busy Edgware Road and suddenly you’re on this peaceful residential street lined with those classic white-fronted London townhouses – honestly, most tourists probably walk right past without even noticing it’s there.
The hotel itself is actually spread across a few of these converted Georgian buildings, which explains why the layout feels a bit maze-like when you first arrive. Don’t expect those massive American-style hotel lobbies – this is more intimate, almost like staying at a well-appointed friend’s place (if your friend happened to own several million-pound properties in central London). The rooms vary quite a bit depending on which building you’re in and what floor – some have those gorgeous high ceilings and original features, while others are more compact and modern. The staff at check-in were refreshingly straightforward about this, actually showing me photos of different room types rather than just handing over a key and hoping for the best.
What really works about this place is the location – and I don’t just mean it’s “convenient” (though it absolutely is). You’re literally around the corner from Speaker’s Corner if you fancy some weekend entertainment, Baker Street is a pleasant ten-minute stroll through the backstreets, and you can cut through to Regent’s Park without dealing with any major roads. There’s a decent pub called The Beehive just down the street that locals actually use, plus you’ve got Selfridges practically on your doorstep when you need it. The 7.8 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but for a solid four-star stay in this part of London, it delivers what most people actually need. The WiFi works properly (always a relief), the beds are comfortable enough that I wasn’t cursing my choice at 3am, and there’s something quite lovely about having breakfast while looking out at those tree-lined Georgian squares. Just be aware that like most central London hotels, the rooms aren’t huge – but honestly, if you’re spending much time in your room during a London trip, you’re probably doing it wrong anyway.
