The New Boar Overview

First Impressions

Walking into The New Boar feels like discovering one of those hidden gems that locals have been quietly enjoying for years. This three-star inn sits right on Market Place in Abridge, and honestly, the location couldn’t be more perfect if you’re looking for that authentic English village experience. The building itself has this wonderful traditional pub-hotel character — you know, the kind of place where you can actually picture yourself settling in for a proper stay rather than just passing through.

Location & Getting Around

Here’s what I love about staying in Abridge — you’re genuinely in the Essex countryside, but London isn’t some impossible journey away. The village has this peaceful, almost timeless quality that couples absolutely adore (and the 8.8 location rating from couples proves it). What really sets this place apart is the free private parking right on site, which honestly saves you so much hassle if you’re driving. I mean, finding decent parking in most English towns can be a nightmare, so having your own guaranteed spot is actually a huge relief.

The Room Experience

The accommodations here strike that sweet spot between comfort and character. Each room feels thoughtfully put together without being overly fussy — clean lines, comfortable beds, and those little touches that show someone actually cares about your stay. You’ll find everything you need without the place feeling cluttered or trying too hard. The windows often overlook the market square, which gives you this lovely view of village life happening below. The thoughtful design extends throughout, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Dining & Local Flavor

The ground floor restaurant serves up solid British fare that doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. What I appreciate is how they’ve managed to keep that traditional pub atmosphere while still offering proper hotel dining. The portions are generous, the ingredients feel local and fresh, and the staff actually knows what they’re talking about when you ask about the menu. It’s the kind of place where you can grab a quick bite or settle in for a longer meal, depending on your mood. The menu reflects genuine care and attention to quality.

Why Guests Love It

There’s something refreshingly honest about The New Boar that keeps people coming back. Recent guests consistently rate the location highly (8.7 out of 10), and I think it’s because this place delivers exactly what it promises — a genuine English village experience without any pretense. You’re not paying for unnecessary frills, but you’re getting solid comfort, friendly service, and that rare combination of peaceful surroundings with easy access to both countryside walks and city connections. It’s particularly perfect for couples looking to escape the city buzz while still having options for day trips or exploring the broader Essex area. The consistent positive feedback speaks volumes about the quality of the experience.

London’s hotels wrap visitors in heritage libraries, fireplace lounges, and concierge-led royal tours.
