The Running Horses Overview

First Impressions

You know what strikes you first about The Running Horses? It’s that perfect English countryside pub-with-rooms vibe that feels completely authentic — no forced charm here. Sitting right on Old London Road in Mickleham, this three-star spot has that weathered stone exterior and hanging flower baskets that make you slow down as you’re driving past. I mean, the building itself tells you this place has been welcoming travelers for decades, maybe longer. The character is genuine, from the creaking floorboards to the original fireplaces that still warm the common areas on chilly evenings.

Location Magic

Honestly, the location is what makes this place special — and I’m not just saying that because couples rate it 9.3 out of 10. Mickleham sits in this lovely pocket between Dorking and Leatherhead, where you’re genuinely in Surrey countryside but still close enough to civilization. You can walk the North Downs Way practically from the front door, and Box Hill is just a short drive if you’re into hiking or cycling. The village itself is tiny but charming, with that classic English feel where everyone knows everyone. It’s the perfect base for exploring the surrounding hills and valleys.

The Room Experience

The room here aren’t trying to be boutique hotel fancy, but they nail the comfort factor — especially those beds everyone raves about. I get why guests keep coming back (apparently there are way more repeat visitors than most places). Each room feels like staying at a well-kept country home rather than a generic hotel. The furnishings are traditional without being stuffy, and you’ll actually get a proper night’s sleep, which honestly can be hit-or-miss at countryside inns. The views from several rooms overlook the gardens and surrounding countryside.

Food and Breakfast

The restaurant downstairs serves solid pub food — nothing revolutionary, but done well with local ingredients when possible. What really impressed me was their breakfast setup, especially if you’re dealing with dietary restrictions. They’ve got proper gluten-free options that aren’t just an afterthought, which shows they’re paying attention to what guests actually need. The full English is generous without being overwhelming, and the coffee is better than you’d expect from a traditional pub setting. The dining room has a warm, welcoming atmosphere perfect for both intimate dinners and group gatherings.

Why Guests Love It

Look, The Running Horses isn’t going to wow you with spa treatments or fancy amenities — that’s not what it’s about. What it does brilliantly is create this relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere where you can properly unwind. The staff treat you like locals rather than tourists, and there’s decent parking right there (which matters more than you think when you’re exploring Surrey). It’s the kind of place where you end up staying longer than planned, chatting with other guests over a pint, and already planning your next visit before you’ve checked out. The genuine hospitality and attention to detail make all the difference.

Hotels near me in London deliver quick strolls to theatre premieres, Borough tastings, and canal-side cycling.

Reviews of The Running Horses

We selected The Running Horses for our stay primarily because of its long history–over 400 years–as an inn. It was a great experience from start to finish. The facility was wonderful, authentic, and run like clockwork. It was only on our last day that we learned the inn is the 2023 winner of the National Pub & Bar of the Year Awards, and it shows from the professional staff, to the delicious and locally-sourced food and drink, and especially the welcoming atmosphere. Hopefully, we can return for another visit!
