The Mitre, Hampton Court Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to The Mitre, Hampton Court, you immediately get that feeling you’ve stumbled onto something special. This five-star Georgian coaching inn sits right across from Hampton Court Palace — I mean, you literally can’t get closer to Henry VIII’s stomping grounds without camping in the palace gardens. The building itself has this wonderful weathered elegance that speaks to centuries of hosting travelers, though thankfully the amenities have kept pace with modern expectations.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re in East Molesey, which feels like a proper English village despite being just a short train ride from central London. Hampton Court Palace is your neighbor, and honestly, watching tourists stream past your window while you sip morning coffee never gets old. The Thames is right there too, perfect for those riverside walks that make you feel like you’re in a period drama. Couples absolutely rave about this spot, and I can see why — there’s something undeniably romantic about staying somewhere with this much history wrapped around you.
The Room Experience
The rooms blend period charm with luxury touches in a way that actually works. You’ll find original features like exposed beams alongside modern comforts — the kind of place where your room feels substantial rather than just functional. What struck me most was the attention to detail; even the smaller rooms don’t feel cramped, and many have views either toward the palace or the charming street scene below. The beds are properly comfortable too, which matters more than you’d think after a day of palace touring.
Dining & Amenities
The restaurant here deserves mention — it’s got this cozy, intimate atmosphere that works whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or settling in for a proper dinner. Breakfast is continental style, which some might find limiting, but honestly, the quality makes up for the simpler selection. There’s also parking available right at the hotel, which is genuinely helpful since this area can get busy with palace visitors during peak times. You know what’s nice? They’ve managed to maintain that historic inn feeling without sacrificing the service standards you’d expect from a luxury property.
Why Guests Love It
This place works because it gives you that authentic English experience without the usual compromises. You’re staying somewhere with genuine historical significance — not just tourist-trap theming — while still getting modern comfort and service. The staff seem to understand that people come here for the location and atmosphere, so they lean into that rather than trying to be something they’re not. For couples especially, there’s something magical about being this close to one of England’s most famous palaces while staying in a building that’s been welcoming guests for centuries. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a secret, even though it’s been here all along.

Reviews of The Mitre, Hampton Court
Pamela from Isle of Man (9/10)
Superb location , superb breakfast in a stunningly scenic dining room watching swans glide past on the Thames , we had dinner in the restaurant and it was excellent , charming staff throughout the hotel, room and amenities were 1st class., every detail catered for.
I would have liked a take away pamphlet of the history of the hotel , not often you get to stay in a hotel built for a King in 1665.
Would not hesitate to book again.Robin from United Kingdom (9/10)

The atmosphere, the room features, the river flowing beneath were magical. The room was very clean and spacious, the bed very comfortable. I liked the multiple lamps around the room. I also got a top floor room as per my request, which I appreciated. It is a really nice small guesthouse brimming with its history. Ideal for a few days out of Central London, but still close. The semi-circular breakfast room was particularly enjoyable.

The hotel proved very flexible when we had to change some dates and bookings. Staff are very helpful and friendly and communications with the hotel was perfect. Accommodated us for a last minute quick lunch in their fantastic restaurant. The room was perfect and the location as ideal as expected.

I didn't have breakfast. I loved the peace and quiet. Once in my room, I wasn't aware of anyone else nearby. Coffee machine was really good. Shower: lovely.

Nice decor and cosy atmosphere. The room was huge and with a river view. Just across the road from Hampton Court Palace
