Astor Court Hotel Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to the Astor Court Hotel on Hallam Street, you’ll notice it’s one of those classic London townhouse conversions that actually feels intimate rather than cramped. The building has that proper Georgian charm without being stuffy about it — honestly, it’s refreshing to find a three-star place in London that doesn’t try to be something it’s not. The lobby is compact but welcoming, and the staff genuinely seem to know what they’re doing, which isn’t always a given in this part of town.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s the thing about Hallam Street — it’s perfectly positioned without the chaos of Oxford Street literally outside your window. You’re a two-minute walk from Oxford Circus tube station, which means you can actually get anywhere in London without the usual faff. What I really appreciate is how close you are to the BBC Broadcasting House and All Souls Church, giving the area a bit of character beyond just shopping. The street itself is quiet enough that you won’t hear buses rumbling past at 6 AM, but you’re still in Zone 1 where everything happens.
The Room Experience
The room are what you’d expect from a well-run London hotel — not huge, but cleverly designed to feel comfortable rather than claustrophobic. My room had a proper window that opened (you’d be surprised how rare that is), and the bed was actually decent quality, not one of those saggy mattresses you sometimes get in this price range. The bathroom was compact but functional, with good water pressure — honestly, that’s half the battle in older London buildings. Storage space is limited, but there’s enough for a week’s stay if you’re not overpacking.
Breakfast and Daily Rhythms
The continental breakfast setup works well for what it is — nothing fancy, but proper coffee and fresh pastries that’ll get you started without breaking the bank on room service. They do a buffet style service that’s efficient without feeling rushed, which I appreciated when trying to catch early meetings. The breakfast room gets decent natural light, and you can actually sit and plan your day rather than grabbing something and running. It’s one of those small touches that makes the difference between feeling like a guest versus just someone renting a bed.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it balances location with value — you’re paying for that Westminster Borough address without the premium you’d expect. Couples especially seem to get it right here, probably because the area has that romantic London feel without being touristy. The hotel staff know the neighborhood well and can point you toward the good pubs and cafes that locals actually use. You know what? Sometimes you just want a clean, comfortable base in central London where things work properly, and that’s exactly what you get here. The 8.3 rating makes sense when you consider you’re getting genuine London character at a price that won’t make you wince.
