Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about the Mornington Hotel? It’s tucked away on Gloucester Street in a way that feels properly London – you’re right in the thick of things near Victoria Station, but the street itself has this quieter, residential vibe that most tourists never discover. I mean, you can literally walk to Westminster Cathedral in about three minutes (the red brick Catholic one, not the Abbey), and there’s something oddly satisfying about having that massive structure looming around the corner from your hotel window.
The building itself has that classic Victorian brick facade that screams “I’ve been here longer than your great-grandmother,” but honestly, that’s part of the charm. Inside, they’ve done this interesting thing where they’ve kept some of the period features – the original cornicing in the lobby caught my eye – while updating everything else to actually work in 2024. The rooms are what I’d call “London practical” – not massive, because let’s face it, space costs a fortune in Zone 1, but thoughtfully laid out so you’re not constantly bumping into furniture. The beds are actually comfortable, which… well, you’d be surprised how many places get that basic thing wrong.
What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know the neighborhood inside out. The guy at reception didn’t just give me a generic tourist map – he marked up specific pubs (the Plumbers Arms is apparently where locals actually drink), mentioned that the Tesco Express stays open late when you inevitably need snacks, and warned me that the construction on Vauxhall Bridge Road makes the bus route a bit slower in the mornings. Those are the details that matter when you’re trying to live like a human being, not just tick off attractions. The 7.4 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but it delivers on what it promises without any nasty surprises. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the shower pressure was genuinely impressive for a building this old. Victoria Station being so close means you’ve got the Underground, overground trains, and coaches all within a five-minute walk – I actually saw someone wheeling their suitcase back from a Gatwick Express train during my stay. The neighborhood gets properly quiet after about 10 PM too, which is rare for anywhere this central. If you’re the type who wants to experience London without paying Mayfair prices or dealing with the chaos of somewhere like King’s Cross, this place gets it right.
