The Mad Hatter Hotel Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to The Mad Hatter Hotel on Stamford Street, you can’t help but smile at the whimsical name — and honestly, it sets the perfect tone for what you’ll find inside. This three-star property sits right in the heart of Southwark, and I mean literally in the thick of things. You’re a stone’s throw from the Thames, Borough Market is practically around the corner, and the South Bank’s buzzing energy is everywhere you look.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s what I love about staying in this part of London — you get that authentic local feel without being stuck in some touristy bubble. Stamford Street runs parallel to the river, so you’re close enough to all the major sights but far enough away that you won’t be fighting crowds just to grab coffee in the morning. The Tate Modern is maybe a ten-minute walk, and if you want to cross over to the City, Blackfriars Bridge is right there. I’ve noticed couples especially seem drawn to this area, probably because there’s something romantic about those riverside evening strolls.
The Room Experience
Now, let me tell you about the beds — they’re genuinely comfortable, not just hotel-marketing comfortable. I mean, when you’ve been walking around London all day (and trust me, you will be), sinking into a properly supportive mattress makes all the difference. The room itself has that boutique hotel charm without trying too hard to be quirky. Clean lines, thoughtful touches, and everything you actually need without unnecessary clutter. Each space is thoughtfully designed to maximize comfort during your stay.
Morning Fuel
Breakfast here is where they really show their understanding of different travelers. Sure, you can go full English if that’s your thing, but they’ve also got continental options, plus proper vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices that don’t feel like afterthoughts. I appreciate when a hotel gets that not everyone wants the same heavy breakfast, especially when you’re planning to spend the day exploring Borough Market or wandering through the food stalls along the South Bank. The quality of ingredients shines through in every dish.
Why Guests Love It
What strikes me most about this place is how it balances being properly London without the pretension. You’re staying somewhere that locals would actually recommend, not just another generic hotel that happens to be in the city. The staff seem to genuinely know the neighborhood — they’ll point you toward the good coffee shops, tell you when Borough Market gets too crowded, that sort of thing. And honestly, when you’re paying three-star prices but getting this kind of location and comfort level, it feels like you’re getting away with something. The fact that it consistently rates so highly tells you everything you need to know about whether people leave happy. This is a destination worth choosing.

We loved our stay at The Mad Hatter. We came to London for my 60th birthday. My adult daughter’s and their husband’s came as well. We arrived at the crack of dawn and the hotel let us leave our luggage with them so that we could start exploring the city. When our rooms were ready they called us. When we arrived to our room there was a banner over our bed the said “Happy Birthday “ and there were balloons all over the bed! It was a very nice personal touch! Our rooms were nice and clean, the bed was very comfy. The bathroom was nice and the water pressure was great.
The breakfast was very good with many options. There was a buffet of things like pastries, croissant, yogurt, fruit… and you could also order off the menu. The pub was cute and the bar tenders were very nice.
The reception was always friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay at The Mad Hatter again!Alan from United Kingdom (9/10)

The entrance hall and breakfast court are beautifully decorated. Location is excellent, within reasonable walking distance to the City of Westminster while in its own stunning neighborhood. Staff is super friendly.

We wanted a hotel that felt like England, so that when we woke up we knew we were not in Berlin or Rio in a hotel that could be anywhere. The Mad Hatter suited us perfectly. We had a double room (305) which is modest but a well maintained room with a good king bed, arm chair, desk & chair, superb hot breakfast. Over the course of our visit we had a lunch and a dinner in the Pub restaurant and enjoyed those meals as well. Uber is great to & from the hotel from the sites we visited all over the City. But, it was the staff that were the crowning features of the Mad Hatter: Sammy, Mark, and Luke were all attentive, warm, friendly, and efficient. Loved it!
