The thing about this place is it sits in that sweet spot between proper posh and actually livable. The rooms have this classic British hotel feel – thick curtains, decent-sized beds, and bathrooms that don’t make you feel like you’re showering in an airplane lavatory. Honestly, the air conditioning works better than half the newer places I’ve stayed, which matters more than you’d think during those surprisingly muggy London summers. The staff genuinely seem to know the neighborhood – when I asked about getting to Neal’s Yard without dealing with Oxford Street crowds, the concierge mapped out this perfect route through the backstreets that saved me about twenty minutes of tourist dodging.

What really sells me on the Washington Mayfair is how it handles that whole Mayfair location without the eye-watering prices of the big names. You’re still walking distance from all the ridiculous shopping on Bond Street (if that’s your thing), but you can also slip over to Shepherd Market for a proper pub lunch without feeling like you need to dress up. The hotel bar is nothing spectacular – functional rather than Instagram-worthy – but it’s quiet enough for actual conversation, and they pour a decent gin and tonic. Check-in was refreshingly quick too, none of that theatrical “welcome to our palace” nonsense some London hotels put you through. There’s something to be said for a place that just lets you get on with enjoying the city rather than making a production of itself.
